What are you aiming for?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Appraisal season is here, and this is the annual cycle off the discussion with your boss and managers. <strong>Are you prepared for this discussion?<\/strong> Now you may ask me what exactly I mean by \u2018preparation for the appraisal discussion\u2019. It should ideally be straightforward understanding of your performance through the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And I will tell you that that is the most simplistic way to look at forming your own career path. A simple, \u2018my manager will guide me\u2019 attitude works well if you have an informed manager who <strong>understands your Strengths and Weakness as a professional and a person<\/strong> and then, <strong>acts as your mentor and guide<\/strong> by giving you <strong>learning inputs<\/strong> and help you create a great career for yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do take a moment to decide \u2013 is your manager and \u2018informed and empowered\u2019 manager? If yes, you are lucky.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the truth is, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">very few managers have this type of training or expertise<\/span>. And often appraisal discussions become uncomfortable \u2018moments of truth\u2019:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>when you may have put up all your effort, but the manager is just not convinced that you deserve a rating of 100 on 100.<\/li><li>Or, if you are rated 100 on 100, the comments on career path progression and learning needs are not clearly defined.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Then the question becomes, how can we <strong>empower ourselves<\/strong> and be our guide to a great career? As in everything, we should start by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\"><li><strong>Measuring ourselves:<\/strong> Aptitude, Work Behavior, Interests and Expertise<\/li><li><strong>Comparing with our Peers<\/strong>: yes, let\u2019s check out the competition<\/li><li><strong>Understand our options<\/strong>: Job Roles and industry where we will succeed naturally<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>This will help us also understand <strong>the areas and skills we need to invest our time to Learn and Upskill<\/strong>. Also, which type of jobs and industries we should target within and outside the current organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do you find it interesting?
